Last night we went to see The Dark Knight and Journey to the Center of the Earth at the drive-in. Heath Ledger was amazing as the Joker. Watching the movie I still had trouble seeing him beneath the make up because it was so different from any role he had previously played. I have come to the conclusion that I want the "bat tank" even more now than I did after the last movie. I want "all those wonderful toys". Journey was a rather good movie, too. That kind of surprised me, but B-man enjoyed it a lot.
Today Rob had planned another family outing and hit another first for me. I had never been to a zoo until today. He took us all to the Pittsburgh Zoo. Driving in Pittsburgh is certainly a nightmare, as usual. It was great.
I loved seeing how much B-man has been learning from watching the shows on Discovery Channel. He knew what most of the animals were without even having to read the signs. We got to see the two baby elephants and there were several exhibits that you can crawl through. Tristan loved those. We crawled underneath an aquarium filled with sting rays and another one that housed Meercats. Tristan seemed to love the water exhibits. Sharks, rays, eels, sea lions and polar bears. He really loved watching the penguins. It was also really funny to hear him "eek, eek'ing" at the Howler monkeys ( [livejournal.com profile] lorddjc refers to these as "shit monkeys"). The baby Orangutan was adorable, rolling around and climbing on everything. Walking through the climate controlled "Rain Forest" was interesting. The Pirhana looked harmless which surprised me.
We walked through the Aviary and watched the birds fly back and forth, then to the open area where I became a mobile salt lick for a white tailed deer. She stuck her nose in the stroller to get a peek at Tristan and tried to eat B-man's shirt. We also got to pet a kangaroo and B got to pet a llama. And sadly enough, even though I bathed in sunblock, I still got burned. That's just how white I am.
It was a great day at the zoo, lots of fun and the kids each wanted stuffed animals. B got a baby penguin and Tristan wanted a Kangaroo Rat. After the zoo, we went to a local Pittsburgh restaurant called Permanti Brothers. This restaurant has been around since 1933 and is infamous for their sandwiches. All Permanti sandwiches have cole slaw, french fries and tomato slices on them. I was kind of scared to try it, but I've heard so many people talking about them since we've moved up here. It wasn't bad, probably would have been better if it was the cole slaw that I'm accustomed to from growing up in NC. After all that, we came home to our own zoo. Fingers crossed, but I believe we may have a joey. One of my female gliders has a pea-sized bump, if it doesn't get bigger in the coming weeks, it'll be a trip to the vet.
